Speaker calls for moral renewal to drive national development

The Speaker of Parliament has called on Ghanaians to make moral renewal the foundation of sustainable national development.

Speaking at the National Development Conference 2026 in Gomoa Fetteh, the Speaker said nations rise or fall on the strength of their values, stressing that development should be measured not only by infrastructure but also by the character of leaders and the stewardship of public trust.

He highlighted Parliament’s efforts to strengthen integrity, including the revision of the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament, the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Department within the Parliamentary Service, and the launch of the National Integrity Awards Scheme in 2025.

The Speaker said the awards scheme, chaired by retired Justice William Atuguba, recognises individuals who demonstrate honesty and transparency, adding that strong systems of integrity are essential to good governance.

He urged Ghanaians to raise children who value truth, encourage public servants to put service above self-interest, and support leaders who place national interest ahead of partisan considerations, saying stronger integrity would help build trust, strengthen institutions and promote sustainable national development.

# KMA demolishes illegal structures in Kumasi decongestion exercise The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has demolished illegal structures in the Asafo area as part of an ongoing exercise to decongest the Kumasi Central Business District and enforce building and sanitation regulations. The operation, carried out with bulldozers, was met with resistance from some occupants, who allegedly pelted members of the KMA task force with stones and other objects. At least one task force member sustained injuries during the exercise. KMA officials said the operation targeted unapproved structures that posed sanitation and security concerns. They explained that no prior notice was given to occupants to prevent attempts to obstruct the exercise. Affected traders, however, insisted they had occupied the land legally after making payments to local authorities and the railway authorities. They argued that they had developed the area over the years and that the demolition had destroyed their businesses and sources of livelihood. The exercise affected several small businesses, including shoemaking, grocery shops and beverage vendors, with many traders expressing concern over the loss of both their workplaces and homes. The KMA maintains that the decongestion exercise will continue as part of efforts to restore order, improve sanitation and enhance security within the Kumasi Central Business District.
