The final, scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, will feature a star-studded half-time show curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
According to reports, performers will include Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS, Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, the PS22 Chorus, and characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets.
The proposed extension has sparked debate because the Laws of the Game, set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), limit the half-time interval to 15 minutes unless the referee grants permission.
FIFA has not officially confirmed the final duration of the break but is expected to extend it to allow for the construction and removal of the stage on the pitch.
The half-time show is being co-produced by Global Citizen to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to expand access to education and football opportunities for children worldwide.
Some players, coaches and football observers have raised concerns that a prolonged break could disrupt players’ rhythm and increase the risk of injuries during the match.
The World Cup final will see Spain face the winner of the semi-final between England and Argentina.
