The Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) and the police have raided a manufacturing site in the Greater Accra Region where seven Chinese and Nigerian nationals were found producing electrical cables and copper rods without certification and under the protection of some military personnel.
Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the products were labelled as Jupiter Cable Electrique and had logos of the GSA, with the inscription ‘Made in Turkey, China and Nigeria‘.
The directors of Fenice Metals Technology Company Limited, the company behind the illegal manufacturing, had not gone through the processes for approval to secure the license to sell, despite having made some sales.
To acquire a license as a manufacturer, one would notice the GSA about the manufacturing activities and put in an application for processes and final approval, after which the GSA would carry out a test run of production by sampling the products to the lab and carrying out an inspection report on the factory.
Fenice Metals Technology Company Limited had put in an application and made payments for certification and other fees, but a license had not been issued to the company. The company had sold 17,000 tonnes of copper rods to Tropical Metal on March 6, before acquiring a license.
The company's power consumption was cut off from the national grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for bypassing power during a recent revenue mobilization exercise.
Mr George Anti, Head of Enforcement, GSA, stated that the GSA will be applying the strictest of sanctions to the company and will be waiting for the outcome of ongoing investigations.
