The Greater Regional Hospital has made a significant breakthrough in diagnosing rare diseases, with 50 children identified with these conditions in the country. Dr Yvonne Brew, a Pediatrician at Ridge Hospital, revealed that some of these children were the first to be diagnosed with such conditions in Africa, providing immense relief to healthcare workers and families.

This achievement was highlighted during a lighting-up event hosted by the Rare Disease Ghana Initiative to commemorate the 2024 World Rare Disease Day. Rare diseases are characterized by their low prevalence, difficulty in diagnosis, and a wide range of symptoms. The day aims to raise awareness of these conditions and their impact on individuals and families.

Dr. Brew emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, particularly as nearly 70% of rare diseases manifest in childhood. She praised the Rare Disease Ghana Initiative for its role in diagnosing these conditions, which enables healthcare professionals to develop management plans and provide better support to affected families.

Mr. Samuel Adjei-Wiafi, Executive Director of the Rare Disease Ghana Initiative, highlighted the significance of the lighting-up event at Ridge Hospital, urging collaboration among policymakers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the community to address the needs of individuals living with rare diseases. He called for the establishment of a national policy on rare diseases, enhanced infrastructure for diagnosis, and the inclusion of rare disease treatment in the essential medicine list.

Mr. Adjei-Wiafi also emphasized the importance of early screening at birth to identify newborns with rare diseases promptly. He noted that the Rare Disease Ghana Initiative has documented over 200 families affected by rare diseases, underscoring the need for concerted efforts to support these individuals.

Dr. Ralph Armah, Head of Clinical Services at Ridge Hospital, reiterated the hospital's commitment to raising awareness about rare diseases and dispelling misconceptions. He urged the public not to stigmatize individuals with rare diseases and emphasized the importance of understanding that these conditions are often hereditary rather than spiritually influenced.

Overall, the event highlighted the progress made in diagnosing and addressing rare diseases in Ghana, while also emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and support for affected individuals and families.
