Mali demonstrated their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d'Ivoire 2023 ambitions with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in Tuesday's Group E clash in Korhogo.
The match began openly, with both teams exchanging attacks. Mali's Lassine Sinayoko had an early opportunity to put his team ahead in the 4th minute, but his attempt was thwarted by a reflex save from South Africa's goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
South Africa's Percy Tau countered with a threatening run-through on goal, forcing Djigui Diarra to make a crucial save.
In the 19th minute, Tau had a chance to give Bafana Bafana the lead as VAR awarded them a penalty. However, he failed to capitalize on the opportunity, blasting the ball over the bar.
Mali intensified their offensive efforts in the second half, with Amadou Haidara hitting the crossbar. The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when Hamari Traore bundled in the opening goal.
Just five minutes later, Sinayoko extended Mali's lead by slotting a low shot through Williams' legs, putting Mali firmly in control of the match.
Despite a late rally from South Africa, including a free-kick from Themba Zwane that hit the woodwork, they couldn't overturn the deficit.
With this victory, Mali now tops Group E on goal difference, alongside Namibia, who surprised Tunisia with a 1-0 win earlier in the day.
The performance showcased Mali's quality, featuring players like Yves Bissouma, Amadou Haidara, and Sekou Koita, suggesting that they have the potential to make a significant impact in the tournament hosted in Cote d'Ivoire.
