Krofrom Market Project in Kumasi left abandoned, becomes haven for criminals

The Krofrom market, initially intended to be a bustling commercial hub in , has transformed into a haven for rodents and criminals. Despite its multi-million- investment, the site now resembles a forest, with young boys setting traps for rats and criminal activities rampant both day and night.

Former President Kuffuor initiated the project in 2007, envisioning its completion within six months. However, due to a lack of funds, construction was abandoned in 2008. The market, designed to house over 500 stores and shelves, was expected to boost business activities in the metropolis and alleviate congestion in the central business district alongside the redevelopment of other markets.

Unfortunately, the project's abandonment has led to its decay, hindering economic growth and posing risks to residents and traders. Appeals for its completion have gone unanswered, exacerbating frustrations among those affected. Traders near the site express concern over its impact on commercial activities, while residents lament the rise in criminality and unsanitary conditions.

Madam Charity Ayamba, a Kente weaver in the area, highlights the project's abandonment as a source of worry for the community, despite providing space for her business. Mr. Kofi Douglas, a resident, describes navigating the area as perilous, with criminals exploiting the market's neglect.

Assemblyman Isaac Owusu acknowledges the challenges posed by the abandoned market, citing economic stagnation and increased criminal activity. He has taken steps to address the situation, including installing streetlights and planning for the area's cleanup.

The plight of the Krofrom market underscores the urgent need for government intervention to revive the project and restore safety and economic vitality to the area.
