Teachers who accept postings to rural and hard-to-reach communities will now qualify for study leave with pay after two years of service instead of the previous three years, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced.
The Minister announced in Parliament on July 2, 2026, as part of measures to address teacher shortages and improve retention in underserved communities.

He said the government will also introduce a 20% rural posting allowance for teachers serving in deprived areas to encourage more educators to accept such postings.
Originally, it was three years if you were in a deprived area. We have reduced it now to two years, so any person who accepts posting to a rural deprived area, after two years of service, can apply for study leave with pay, “Hon Iddrisu said.
According to the Minister, the policy forms part of efforts to tackle Ghana’s teacher shortage, which is estimated at between 50,000 and 90,000, by attracting and retaining qualified teachers in rural schools.
