Ghana Armed Forces organises open day

The held its annual open day on Thursday, March 7th, with this year's event hosted by the Ghana Airforce across bases in , , and . The open day provided an opportunity for Ghanaians from all walks of life to visit various military garrisons nationwide and witness firsthand the utilization of military equipment and facilities.

The event, which draws thousands of attendees annually including students, pupils, religious groups, individuals, and women's groups, aims to foster cooperation between the military and the civilian population. It also serves to educate and provide an experience of military activities within the country and beyond.

Among the highlights of the day were short-distance flights offered to attendees. While many, especially children, expressed excitement and joy during their flights, others had mixed reactions. Ten-year-old Abena Okyerewaa, who experienced her first airplane ride on the CASA 295 fixed-wing aircraft, was ecstatic, expressing her gratitude and excitement to the (GNA).

“I thank God that for the first time in my life, I have sat in an aeroplane. I will one day travel to America,” she said enthusiastically.

However, the experience affected nine-year-old Olivia differently, as she cried and screamed throughout the helicopter ride due to her fear of heights.

“She is scared of heights, but she will be okay,” her mother briefly told the GNA.

Despite varying reactions, attendees like Mushida Sumaila, a young mother of two, found the event worthwhile. Having previously boarded a military aircraft, Sumaila attended the open day with her baby son, Ali, to enjoy the flight once again.

The annual open day organized by the serves as an important opportunity for civilians to engage with the military, gain insight into their operations, and foster mutual understanding and cooperation between the military and civilian sectors.
