Veteran Politician Succumbs to Illness at Bank of Ghana Hospital
Mark Owen Woyongo, a former Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, has passed away at the age of 74. The Woyongo Family head, Mr. Awini Zinge, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Thursday, January 18.
Mark Woyongo had been battling illness for some time and ultimately succumbed on Wednesday, January 17, at the Bank of Ghana Hospital in Accra.
The veteran politician served as the MP for Navrongo Central from 2012 to 2016 and announced his retirement from politics in December 2016, expressing that he would not contest any political position again.
Mark Woyongo's political career included serving as the Upper East Regional Minister, initially appointed by late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2009 and retained in the position by former President John Dramani Mahama after President Mills' passing.
In 2013, President Mahama nominated Woyongo for the position of Minister for Defence, and in 2014, he was further nominated for the position of Interior Minister. Mark Woyongo's contributions to Ghana's political landscape will be remembered, and his passing marks the end of an era in the country's political history.
