Motorists and commuters are calling on the government to urgently rehabilitate the SCC–Old Barrier section of the Kasoa–Mallam Highway, saying its deteriorating condition is causing severe traffic congestion and posing serious safety risks.
Road users say extensive potholes, failed sections of the carriageway and persistent flooding have reduced parts of the three-lane road to a single usable lane.

They attribute the worsening condition to wastewater flowing onto the road from the Bortianor and Red Top communities after a major drainage channel near Noble House became blocked with silt.
The damaged road has created long traffic queues, with commuters reporting that a journey that previously took less than two minutes now takes more than 40 minutes during peak hours.
The poor condition of the road has also forced some motorists travelling from Kasoa towards Mallam to drive onto the opposite carriageway to avoid damaged sections, increasing the risk of head-on collisions.
Commercial drivers say the congestion is reducing the number of trips they can make each day and affecting their income.
“The government should come and repair this road as soon as possible. We spend hours stuck in traffic every day because of this stretch, and it is reducing the number of trips we can make,” trotro driver Kwame Amissah said.
Commuters also say the persistent delays are disrupting their daily lives. A banker, Joana, said she was considering relocating because of the traffic, while a military officer, Akua, said she now leaves home at 4:00 a.m. to report for duty at the 37 Military Hospital by 6:00 a.m.
