The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a meeting with political parties in Accra on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to deliberate on the Commission's proposed calendar for the upcoming 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to a letter signed by Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairman in Charge of Corporate Services at the EC, the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting will focus on discussing the Commission's proposed Election 2024 Programme along with other pertinent issues.
Each political party has been requested to send three representatives to participate in the meeting, as outlined in the letter addressed to the political parties.
While the EC released its calendar for the 2024 General Election on Monday, March 4, 2024, the timelines stated in the reports have not been officially confirmed by the Commission. However, some political parties, including the National Democratic Congress, have expressed concern over the lack of prior consultation with them regarding the proposed election calendar.
In anticipation of the IPAC meeting, Mr. Evans Nimako, Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party, stated in a media interview that the party would be keen on scrutinizing the election calendar as published in the media.
According to the proposed election programme, the EC plans to receive nominations of candidates for the presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to 13. This will be followed by the balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper on September 23, 2024, and the parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024.
Furthermore, the Commission aims to declare the results of the 2024 presidential polls within three days of the voting exercise, as outlined in the proposed election calendar.
