The collation and declaration of results for the District Level Elections in the Amanfro Electoral Area of the Ga South Municipal Assembly faced challenges, extending late into the night due to continuous interruptions at the results collation centre.
The collation centre, situated at St. Peter Catholic School in Amanfro Quarters, saw a growing crowd as Electoral Commission (EC) officials from 38 polling stations arrived to submit election materials and voting documents for collation after the polls had closed.
The open-space centre cordoned off with tape and classroom desks serving as barricades, had two security officers present.
However, the tabulation of results, which began around 1900 hours, encountered disruptions as unauthorized individuals crossed the barricade, interfering with the process.
Around 2020 hours, a brief halt was announced due to delayed results from the Ngleshie Amanfro polling station, leading to discontent among the crowd. A commotion ensued, prompting a police officer's intervention.
The officer, overwhelmed and manhandled, called for reinforcement, which arrived 20 minutes later to disperse the crowd and restore order.
A makeshift human barricade was formed, with people holding hands to prevent further disruptions.
Despite some alleging that the police had used pepper spray on the crowd, the collation process resumed with the arrival of remaining polling station results, continuing until approximately 2200 hours.
Amidst the late-night proceedings, some attendees reported uncontrollable coughing. Mr. Robert Owusu, the EC official overseeing the collation process, had to be persuaded to continue the process.
In the end, Mr. Joseph Kobina Fiamor emerged as the Assemblyman-elect for the Amanfro Electoral Area with 1294 votes.
He was closely followed by Mr Jonathan Odartey Lamptey with 1271 votes, and Mr Eugene Nii Sackey Aggudey secured 550 votes.
At the Unit Committee Level, the duly elected individuals were Mr Martin Gbodo (1060 votes), Madam Peace Amegadzie (1053 votes), Mr Turkson Tagoe (1038 votes), Mr Yakubu Donkor (1033 votes), and Madam Sarah Micah (1033 votes).
The collation process concluded at 2300 hours amid the challenging circumstances.
