Ghana has appealed to its development partners to share their digital innovations in a bid to build a transformative digital ecosystem and create sustainable job opportunities.
Dr Kwaku Afriyie, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), emphasized the importance of ensuring that developing countries are not left behind in the global digital drive to achieve an inclusive digital space.
The call came during the opening ceremony of the 3rd Ghana Digital Innovation Week in Accra, where Dr Afriyie delivered his message via Mr Patrick Nomo, the Chief Director of MESTI.
The three-day event provided a platform for showcasing digital innovations and engaging in discussions about the opportunities within the industry. The event was held under the theme, “Innovate, collaborate, elevate: shaping a future of endless potential.”
Dr. Afriyie highlighted the need for advanced technology and innovation nations to engage in discussions and collaborations concerning digital innovations, emphasizing the potential for global contributions.
He stated, “…It's fortunate that we have all these countries as our development partners, and we call on you to share your lessons and experiences to guide us in making meaningful contributions to global innovation.”
Ghana has made significant progress in its digitization agenda, but the Minister stressed that there is still work to be done in terms of skills development, infrastructure, and policy instruments.
In a speech read on her behalf, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, emphasized the importance of collaboration in bridging the digital divide and urged development partners to continue supporting Ghana in achieving its digitization goals.
She stated, “Collaboration is the cornerstone of progress, and it is through true partnerships that we can accelerate our journey toward a digitally inclusive society.”
Mr. Selorm Adadevoh, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN, projected that Ghana's digital ecosystem would become more dynamic in the next decade, stressing the need for increased investment in the sector to unlock its full potential.
He emphasized the importance of research, political will, and policy action to create an enabling environment for the sector to thrive.
The Ghana Digital Innovation Week, a nationwide series of events celebrating milestones in Ghana's Digital Innovation Ecosystem, provides a platform for various stakeholders to learn, exchange ideas, and establish connections to advance the progress of the digital landscape.
