Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has donated GH₵200,000 to aid the victims of the recent fire at Madina Market in the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. During his visit to the market on Friday, he expressed the government's commitment to support the affected traders and announced plans for further financial assistance through the Women's Empowerment Fund and the Ghana Enterprises Agency.
The devastating fire, which occurred on April 10, affected approximately 110 traders and resulted in significant property loss. In response, the government has pledged to construct two three-storey blocks at the market, featuring 120 stores and additional shop spaces on the ground floor, aimed at enhancing the market's infrastructure.
Addressing the traders, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the importance of subscribing to fire insurance to mitigate financial losses in future incidents. He also stressed the need for proper electrical installations by certified electricians to prevent similar disasters.
Furthermore, the Vice President highlighted the upcoming commissioning of hostel facilities for head potters in Madina and Ashiaman, scheduled for May 4, 2024. These facilities are intended to provide comfortable accommodations and opportunities for skills training.
In his remarks, Daniel Nii Titus Glover, the Greater Accra Regional Minister-Designate, praised Dr. Bawumia's leadership and urged the traders to support his candidacy in the upcoming December elections.
Madam Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, warned traders against scammers and urged them to register with the Assembly to facilitate the validation process for receiving aid.
Chief Fire Officer Salia Abdulai offered fire safety advice to the market community, cautioning them against illegal electrical connections, a common cause of market fires.
