Visually impaired students who completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are facing placement delays in Senior High Schools, according to Dr. Peter Obeng Asamoa, President of the Ghana Blind Union.
Dr. Asamoa expressed frustration over the persistent delay in placing visually impaired students, a recurring issue that has affected students over the years.
Despite engagements with the Special Education Division of the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders, the placement delays persist.
“As of today, Okuapeman Senior High, Mawuli Senior High, and Wenchi Senior High Schools have not received any placement of the visually impaired students, and it is frustrating to the students as well as their parents,” he reported to the Ghana News Agency.
Highlighting the issue, Dr. Asamoa emphasized that the Ghana Education Service was aware in advance of the visually impaired students completing the examination and needing placement.
However, they consistently find themselves among the last batch of students to be placed in Senior High Schools.
Dr. Asamoa called on the government to prioritize the education of children with disabilities in Ghana and ensure the effective implementation of the Inclusion Education policy.
