Residents of the Duu electoral area in the Wa East district of the Upper West Region have taken a decisive step to ban all politicians from campaigning in their area during the 2024 election season.
This move serves as a protest against what they perceive as a pattern of neglect by successive governments.
During a mini durbar convened to voice their concerns to authorities, residents expressed dismay over the deplorable condition of their roads and the absence of electricity in the electoral area.
The Duu electoral area encompasses three vital farming communities within the Wa East district: Duu, Saahe, and Jonfian.
With a population exceeding 5,000 residents, this region boasts expansive arable land, offering significant agricultural potential, as more than 90 per cent of its inhabitants engage in farming.
However, the road network connecting these communities becomes impassable during the rainy season, isolating the area. This hampers the transportation of agricultural produce and makes it challenging for pregnant women to access healthcare services.
Investigations by Citi News have revealed that the road contract was awarded a staggering 12 years ago, and despite initial work on drain culverts, the contractor abandoned the project, leaving commuters in a precarious situation.
Furthermore, the Duu electoral area has been without electricity for eight years. Residents allege that electricity poles were initially installed to secure their votes but were subsequently abandoned.
This has left the community frustrated, and they are demanding their fair share of national resources, emphasizing their history of tax compliance with the Wa East district assembly.
