The Kumasi International Airport is on track to commence full operations by the end of June this year, with the government announcing plans to commission the project by the end of May. The airport, officially handed over to the Ghana Airports Company Limited, is currently undergoing equipment testing to facilitate both domestic and international flights.
The facility, designed to accommodate over 800,000 passengers annually from the northern and middle belt regions of the country, marks a significant step in Ghana's aviation infrastructure development. Contractors have outlined plans to expand the runway and demolish old facilities once the new terminal is operational.
During a tour of the project, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah expressed satisfaction with the progress while emphasizing the importance of long-term maintenance for optimal functionality. He noted that commissioning the facility in May does not signify immediate operation, with additional testing required before full functionality is achieved by the end of June.
Meanwhile, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II underscored the airport's crucial role in the country's socioeconomic development during a meeting with the Transport Minister and Ghana Airport Company Limited officials. He urged expedited completion of the Boankra Inland Port, emphasizing its synergy with the airport in bolstering the economy. The Asantehene urged the government to address obstacles hindering progress on the Inland Port project, advocating for the allocation of resources, if necessary, to ensure its timely completion.
