Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has expressed confidence in Ghana’s chances of securing a spot in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, despite recent setbacks.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Ofei acknowledged the challenges facing the national team but remained optimistic about their qualification prospects. “We have a lot of work to do, but I think we’re in a good position to qualify for the World Cup,” he stated.

The pressure on the technical team has increased following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. This setback has fueled calls for a resurgence, with head coach Otto Addo and his team under scrutiny to deliver results on the international stage.
Ofei, who also serves as the head coach of Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, is currently preparing them for the U-20 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire this April. His appointment to the senior national team comes at a crucial time, as the Black Stars aim to restore their reputation in global football.
Describing his new role as an honour, Ofei emphasized his commitment to supporting the head coach and contributing to the team’s success. “Being part of the technical team of the ‘A’ national team is a privilege. I’m very honoured to have been given this opportunity,” he said.
The Black Stars’ technical setup has seen notable reinforcements, including experienced German coach Winfried Schäfer as a technical advisor. Ofei believes the current team structure is solid. “I feel like the setup looks really strong, with a very experienced technical advisor in Winfried Schäfer. The chemistry is going to be there,” he noted.
Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign will be crucial in rebuilding trust among fans, who have high expectations following recent disappointments. Ofei remains hopeful that with a determined technical team, including a new head of video analysis and a sports psychologist, the Black Stars will be well-prepared for the challenge ahead.
