Retired Colonel Festus Aboagye, a security analyst, has stated that the purported invasion of Western Togoland into Ghana was a hoax.
The Homeland Study Group, which seeks to establish an autonomous country known as Western Togoland, had caused disruptions in the Volta region and some of its members were arrested and charged with crimes including treason felony and conspiracy to commit crime.
Speaking on the Big Issue program on Citi TV, Retired Colonel Aboagye dismissed reports of a terrorist invasion, calling it a ploy that resulted in casualties and arrests. He went on to question the whereabouts of the arrested persons and the outcome of the event.
Western Togoland
The Homeland Study Group has been making efforts to push its agenda since 2019, including blocking major roads connecting the Volta region to Accra, declaring independence for the imaginary Western Togoland country, and allegedly carrying out violent attacks in the region.
In October 2020, the Ghanaian government charged 78 alleged separatists with treason felony, conspiracy to commit a crime, participating in a campaign of prohibited organization, causing unlawful damage, and other offences.
The group's activities have led to other incidents in the region, including a raid on police stations and injuries to officers, as well as an alleged plan to burn down the Ho Central Market and other installations. However, the Homeland Study Group Foundation has denied any involvement in these violent incidents.
