The National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2020 Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Naa Koryoo Okunor, has expressed strong disapproval of the Ghana Armed Forces' decision to reassign Lieutenant Colonel Frank Agyeman to the 64 Infantry Battalion.
Lt. Col. Agyeman faced criticism for his involvement in the arrest and assault of Citi FM and Citi TV Journalist, Mr. Caleb Kudah, prompting calls for accountability.
Speaking on Citi TV's Breakfast Daily program, Naa Koryoo Okunor characterized Lt. Col. Agyeman's reappointment as “disrespectful and a slap in the faces of Ghanaians.” She raised concerns about the lack of trust in the state's ability to hold those involved accountable for the assault on Mr. Caleb Kudah.
“Such acts are disrespectful and a slap in our faces, and I urge all well-meaning Ghanaians to speak up against this,” Okunor stated, calling on the public to voice their opposition to Lt. Col. Agyeman's new position.
Director of Legal Affairs of the NDC, Mr. Abraham Amailiba, echoed these sentiments, condemning the appointment as an “insult to Ghanaians.” He emphasized the need for Lt. Col. Agyeman to be probed and sanctioned for his actions before any consideration of a new appointment.
“Lt. Col Agyeman's appointment is not just a disrespect to Ghanaians, but an insult to Ghanaians,” said Amailiba, criticizing the decision to appoint him rather than conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Lt. Col. Agyeman's temporary transfer to the Ministry was terminated due to inappropriate conduct following the arrest and assault of Caleb Kudah.
The National Security Ministry directed further probes into the actions of Lt. Col. Agyeman and others involved. The subsequent appointment has sparked public outcry, with many questioning the lack of a comprehensive investigation before such a move.
Caleb Kudah's ordeal, which triggered this controversy, involved his arrest for filming abandoned cars at the Ministry of National Security.
Naa Koryoo Okunor, alongside other NDC officials, has called for transparency, accountability, and justice in addressing the alleged misconduct within the National Security apparatus.
