Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made a resolute stance against LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, emphasizing the opposition of the Islamic faith and other religions in the country to such practices.
Speaking during the Eidul-Fitr prayers at the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his unwavering opposition to LGBTQ activities, stating that they would not be tolerated under his leadership.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghanaian cultural and societal norms frown upon homosexuality and that his personal views align with the position of his religious faith. He highlighted that the Holy Quran contains verses explicitly prohibiting LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages, and affirmed his strict adherence to these teachings.
The Vice President underscored his unwavering stance against LGBTQ practices, stating, “I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocally forbid.”
The remarks from Vice President Bawumia come amidst calls from various quarters, particularly within certain Muslim communities, urging clarity on his position regarding the LGBT issue.
In February of this year, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which imposes a minimum three-year jail term and a maximum five-year incarceration on individuals engaged in and promoting homosexual activities in the country.
However, the bill is pending the signature of President Akufo-Addo, following a legal challenge at the Supreme Court against its provisions.
