The Government of Ghana has received the first batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks in the country.
The evacuees arrived on May 27, 2026, and were received by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson and other senior government officials.

Welcoming the returnees on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Mr Debrah said the government remained committed to protecting Ghanaian nationals and considered the evacuation necessary to ensure their safety amid the challenging circumstances in South Africa.
He also assured the evacuees of government support to facilitate their reintegration.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and safety of Ghanaians wherever they may be.
He commended institutions, including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), for their roles in the evacuation exercise.
According to the Minister, each evacuee will receive psychosocial and medical support, as well as a reintegration allowance, to help them rebuild their lives.
The evacuees expressed appreciation to the government for the assistance, intervention and reception accorded them upon their arrival.
