The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Government of Ghana fully funded the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.
The Ministry said it has taken note of media reports indicating that the South African Government is seeking reimbursement of $18 million from several African countries for support provided in evacuating their nationals.

It stated that Ghana did not seek any financial or material support from the South African Government to bring Ghanaian nationals back home.
The Ministry said the latest round of evacuations has also been fully funded by the Government of Ghana and Ghanaian partners.
Since May 2026, more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated from South Africa, with the evacuations continuing.
Upon arrival in Ghana, the evacuees are provided with reintegration funds, transport fares and other relief items to support their reintegration.
The Ministry assured Ghanaians that Ghana will not be among the countries being asked by South Africa to reimburse the cost of repatriating foreign nationals.
It reiterated the Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and taking timely action whenever their safety and security are at risk.
The Ministry also expressed gratitude to President John Mahama and Ghanaian partners for supporting the fully Ghanaian-funded evacuation.
