Late Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng’s autobiography “What I choose to remember” launched in Accra

Before his passing, the late Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, Apagyahene of Akyem Ati Amanfrom, achieved another scholarly milestone by completing the manuscripts of his autobiography, ready to share his story with the world.

Honouring his wishes, his family submitted the manuscripts for publication ahead of his burial, cementing his legacy as an accomplished writer. Families, friends, and dignitaries gathered at the GNAT Hall on Sunday evening to launch the book titled “What I choose to remember.”

The Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who is also the overlord of Nana Gyan-Apenteng, launched the book in his memory at a vigil in Accra. The 22-chapter book employs humour and storytelling, taking readers through his childhood, adult life, work, and experiences abroad.

The autobiography offers a step-by-step account of how his upbringing influenced his journey through student activism, journalism, and political advocacy. Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin praised the late chief for prioritising the welfare of humanity over material wealth and recalled their shared discussions on decentralisation as a tool for national development.

In his review, Nana K.A. Busia, Associate Professor and Research Fellow at the University of London, highlighted how Nana Gyan-Apenteng used media as a tool for social change and social justice, and recommended the book for students of politics, sociology, and international affairs.

Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), outlined constitutional reforms proposed by the late Nana Gyan-Apenteng, including reducing the number of NMC commissioners from 18 to 9 to improve efficiency.

Dr Nana Charles Sifa Twum, Acting Board Chair of the Ghana News Agency, paid tribute to the late Nana Gyan-Apenteng, extolling his courage in speaking against societal ills and urging media practitioners to continue his legacy.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng, a former NMC Chairman, passed away at age 74 in May 2025 in London, United Kingdom, where he was seeking medical treatment. According to his family, he will be buried on October 4, 2025, at Tafo Ati in the Eastern Region.
