The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has raised concerns over the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) failure to furnish customers with a load-shedding timetable amidst ongoing power outages, exacerbating the “Dumsor” phenomenon experienced in parts of Ghana.
In a compliance letter addressed to the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, GRIDCo highlighted ECG's non-compliance with load-shedding management instructions issued by the National System Control Center (NSCC). The letter, dated March 28, emphasized that ECG's disregard for these directives poses a significant risk to the stability of the power grid, potentially leading to avoidable power outages and system collapse.
GRIDCo cited instances where ECG's failure to adhere to load management instructions resulted in a decline in system frequency, triggering emergency measures such as the operation of Automatic Frequency Load Shedding (AFLS) relays and disconnection of feeders serving bulk customers by the SCC.
The company clarified that emergency disconnections, often attributed to GRIDCo by ECG in customer notices, do not accurately reflect the situation, and ECG's disregard for load management instructions constitutes a breach of regulations.
In light of these issues, GRIDCo urged the Minister to intervene and ensure ECG's cooperation in providing a load-shedding timetable to mitigate the impact of power outages on customers.
