GES, UNESCO and Beijing Normal University train over 60 girls in STEM at Tamale tech camp

The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with UNESCO and Beijing Normal University, has organised a week-long Girls in Tech Camp from 13 to 17 April 2026 at Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale.

The programme aimed to highlight the importance of equipping girls with technological skills to become globally competitive in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Over 60 girls participated in the camp. They were drawn from Northern School of Business, Tamale Senior High School, Tamale Girls Senior High School, Bagabaga College of Education Model School, and Danshele KG and Primary School.

The participants went through training, orientation, and practical sessions designed to strengthen their digital and technological skills. Each day introduced new learning experiences to deepen their understanding of STEM opportunities.

A key highlight of the camp was a visit to Red Clay Studio, where the girls observed how creativity and innovation can be turned into practical outcomes.

The participants also interacted with female mentors who shared experiences and encouraged them to pursue their aspirations with confidence.

The Director-General of GES, Prof. Kofi Davis, was represented by the Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access), Dr Issahaque Munawaru, who urged the girls to take STEM education seriously and assured them of GES support.

The Director of the Science Division, Mrs Olicia Opare, reaffirmed efforts to make STEM more inclusive and attractive to girls.

The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr Alhassan Alidu Jnr., also attended to support the initiative.

At the end of the camp, Tamale Senior High School was awarded Overall Best School for its performance and commitment throughout the programme.
