The Tarkwa Nauseum Municipal Assembly (TNMA) has carried out a major decongestion exercise in parts of the Tarkwa township in the Western Region to improve traffic flow and enhance public safety.

The operation covered the stretch from the Pentecost Hospital through the Tarkwa main station, sections of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and the Tarkwa first gate along the Tarkwa, Takoradi highway.

Led by the Assembly in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Prisons Service, Immigration Service and the municipal assembly guards, the exercise involved the removal of traders, beggars and unauthorized structures that had taken over pavements and road shoulders.

Mr. Alex Damtey, Municipal Environmental Health Officer, noted that hawkers had occupied significant portions of the Takoradi, Bogoso road, a major highway.

He said some individuals had permanently parked their vehicles along the stretch, while others were conducting business on parts of the road, contributing to recurring accidents.

“We also discovered that some foreigners have made camps in certain areas, disturbing the public,” he added.

Mr Damtey explained that the Assembly had engaged the traders several times and offered them multiple opportunities to vacate the area voluntarily, but many failed to comply, prompting the enforcement exercise.

The Assembly says the decongestion is part of broader efforts to restore order, ensure road safety and enhance mobility within the rapidly growing mining municipality.
