Mr Kwame Pianim, a renowned economist, has urged graduates of the University of Gold Coast to leverage their skills and embrace opportunities in Ghana’s evolving economic landscape to drive national development.

The university conferred degrees on 546 students across master’s and professional programmes last Saturday under the theme: “Ghana’s Economy: At the Crossroads or on the Right Path?”

Speaking at the congregation, Pianim emphasised that graduates could play a transformative role in the economy. “In times of change, there are opportunities and challenges. You can be the consequential group that transforms Ghana’s economy,” he said, encouraging the use of technology, including artificial intelligence, and a mindset of curiosity to unlock new possibilities.

Bishop Dr Gideon Titi-Ofei, Chancellor of the university, urged graduates to uphold integrity and purpose, noting that national progress depends on principled leadership. “A nation rises when leaders rise, and economies shift when minds shift,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Cedric Bell highlighted the university’s growth from its beginnings as Accra Business School to a comprehensive institution offering flexible postgraduate programmes.

He announced plans to launch a law faculty and expand internationally recognised courses, stressing that Ghana’s economy needs problem-solvers and job creators. Prof. Bell noted that the university’s alumni network exceeds 33,000 across Africa.

Valedictorian Millicent Agyei-Okoampa commended faculty and staff for their guidance, urging her peers to pursue careers with integrity and dedication to nation-building.

“You have not just taught us; you have transformed our lives. You have shaped the way we live today,” she said.
