Blue Water Guards

A total of 539 Blue Water Guards have been commissioned by the Minerals Commission in the Western North Region to support efforts in protecting the country’s forests and water bodies from illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Western North Regional Minister Mr. Wilbert Petty Brentum charged the recruits to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity, and patriotism, warning them against bribery and corruption. He noted that the region had suffered heavily from the impact of galamsey, which has degraded forests and left many water bodies polluted.

Mr. Brentum assured the guards of the full support of the Regional Coordinating Council and the Ghana Police Service, stressing that their task was crucial to restoring the environment. Mr. Dela Edem Awuvey, Head of Corporate Affairs at the Minerals Commission, emphasized that the Blue Water Guards would complement the work of security agencies, serving as whistleblowers and working closely with the police. He cautioned the guards against colluding with illegal miners, reminding them that such acts would attract legal consequences.

On behalf of his colleagues, Mr. Robert Aduhene expressed gratitude to government for the opportunity and pledged their commitment to diligently protect the country’s environment and water resources, in line with the President’s vision of safeguarding natural assets for future generations.
