The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned armed robbery targeting three banks in Labone, Accra, with one suspect arrested and two others killed during a shootout.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after the Police received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. that a robbery syndicate was preparing to attack the GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches in the Labone area.

A response team was deployed and located the suspects in vehicles parked near the banks.
One vehicle attempted to flee, but the Police pursued it and arrested Augustine Okechukwu Maazi. The second occupant escaped.
Occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to escape while firing at the Police, resulting in a shootout in which two suspects were killed.
The Police recovered a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17 and a blow pistol.
Augustine Okechukwu Maazi is in Police custody, assisting with investigations. The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for identification and autopsy.
The Police commended the response team and thanked members of the public whose intelligence contributed to the operation.
GCB Bank subsequently clarified that no robbery or attempted robbery occurred on its Labone branch premises.
The bank said the branch was never breached and that no customers, staff, funds or property were affected, urging customers to continue using its services with confidence.
The Police later confirmed that the intelligence concerned a planned attack on the three banks in the Labone area and that the operation was intercepted before any attack on the banks occurred.
Investigations into the syndicate, the escaped suspect and the recovered items are ongoing.
