Accra, Oct. 17, GNA – The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), operating under the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (PPMED), has received a Special Recognition Award for its outstanding leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing digital transformation in Ghana’s health sector.
The award was presented by Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the GHS, during the 2025 Senior Managers Meeting held at the Mensvic Hotel in Accra.

The meeting, themed “Resetting Healthcare Delivery for an Effective, Accountable and Sustainable Health System,” brought together senior managers and stakeholders from across the country to review performance and outline new strategies to strengthen health service delivery.
The recognition celebrates the ICT Department’s pivotal role in driving the Service’s digitalisation agenda, which focuses on modernising healthcare operations through technology-based systems and innovative data management solutions.
The ceremony was attended by several distinguished national figures, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle; Prof. Newton Binka, Chairman of the GHS Council; and Mr Mark Kurt Nawaane, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health. The dignitaries jointly commended the ICT Department for its innovation and its vital contribution to improving health service delivery in Ghana.
The award also reflects the visionary leadership of the PPMED Directorate and the strategic direction of the ICT Department under Mr Hammond N. Sarkwah, Deputy Director of ICT.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Director of PPMED and the departmental team, Mr Sarkwah expressed appreciation to management and partners for their continuous support, reaffirming the department’s commitment to advancing digital health transformation across the country.
Over the years, the ICT Department has spearheaded several key initiatives, including:
- Digital data management and service delivery applications
- Logistics management and supply chain platforms
- E-learning and continuous professional development systems
- National connectivity and digital infrastructure projects
These efforts have improved efficiency, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making throughout the health system.
This recognition underscores the department’s leadership in leveraging technology to strengthen healthcare delivery, a crucial step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and positioning Ghana as a leader in digital health innovation in Africa.
