The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially stated that specific doctoral degrees from foreign institutions are not recognised for academic or professional purposes in Ghana.
In a public notice signed by Director-General Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC specified that the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Swiss Management Centre (SMC) University and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universidad Central de Nicaragua (UCN) are invalid within the country.

Jointly awarded PhDs from UCN and SMC are also unrecognised.
The directive, which supersedes all prior communications from both GTEC and its predecessor, the National Accreditation Board (NAB), aims to protect Ghana’s higher education integrity.
GTEC emphasised that the institutions and qualifications cited do not meet national accreditation and quality assurance standards.
GTEC warned tertiary institutions, employers, and the public against accepting credentials from these and other unaccredited institutions to prevent the validation of substandard qualifications.
“This measure forms part of a broader strategy to ensure that only degrees from properly accredited institutions are recognised, safeguarding academic and professional standards in Ghana,” the notice stated.
