Severe flooding in parts of the Volta region has forced the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to temporarily close its Bulk Supply Station in Sogakope.
The move is a precautionary measure to protect the facility from damage due to the flooding.
As a result of this action, electricity supply has been disrupted in areas including Sogakope, Anloga, Keta, Akatsi South, Abor, and North Tongu Districts to prevent system failures.
The flooding at the Sogakope Bulk Supply Point is attributed to the spillage of the Akosombo Dam. Engineers from ECG and GRIDCo are working to restore power to affected communities.
While some areas, such as Keta, Akatsi, and Abor, have had their power supply restored, Sogakope and Adidome are yet to come back online.
Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG, expressed regret for any inconveniences caused by the situation and assured customers that the company's engineers are working diligently to restore power across the affected regions.
At the same time, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, has issued a “Save Our Soul” appeal to the government.
The lower Volta Basin has been grappling with rising water levels and flooding due to the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillages since September 15.
Communities like Torgorme, Volo, Battor, Mepe, Bakpa, Sokpoe, and various island settlements have been severely affected, and many areas have lost road connectivity and access to vital resources.
The flooding poses a significant threat to the affected communities and food security in the region.
Schools have been impacted, and road networks are cut off by the floodwaters, compounding the difficulties already faced by these vulnerable communities.
The statement underscores the urgency for government intervention to safeguard lives and property in the region.
