Driver's mate appears in court for robbery

Jeffery Johnson, a 21-year-old driver's mate, has appeared before an Circuit Court on charges of robbery and causing harm. Johnson, along with his accomplices who are currently at large, is accused of robbing two complainants of their mobile phones.

During the robbery, Johnson allegedly stabbed Ebenezer Dapaah, the first complainant, on his right hand before stealing his phone and that of the second complainant, Rosemary Akorli. Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, the court remanded Johnson into police custody to reappear on March 7, 2024.

According to prosecution led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the complainant Ebenezer Dapaah is a chef, while Rosemary Akorli is a kitchen assistant at Papaya Food Company. Johnson is a resident of Teshie.

On February 17, 2024, between 1:00 am and 1:30 am, Johnson and his accomplices arrived at the complainants' house on a motorbike. During the incident, Johnson allegedly stabbed Dapaah with a pair of scissors on his right hand and stole their phones, including an iPhone X, one Huawei, and an Itel phone valued at GHC4,200 in total.

The complainants raised an alarm, leading to Johnson's arrest by residents in the area, although his accomplices managed to escape with the motorbike. Johnson was subsequently handed over to the Teshie Police patrol team.

A search conducted on Johnson revealed one of the stolen phones belonging to the complainant and the pair of scissors allegedly used in the robbery.
