The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced that the final phase of the Kumasi-Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1-K2 Project) and the transformer upgrade at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation will commence on July 20, 2026.
According to the Ministry, the projects are aimed at strengthening the electricity infrastructure to meet the growing energy demands of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

The existing 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line linking the Anwomaso (K2) and Kumasi (Ahodwo) (K1) substations has become increasingly overloaded due to rapid population growth and commercial expansion.
The upgrade will replace the current 364MVA single-circuit line with a modern double-circuit transmission line rated at 2 x 488MVA, increasing total transmission capacity to 978MVA.
The Ministry said the project will significantly improve the reliability, resilience and efficiency of power supply while supporting future residential, commercial and industrial development.
As of July 16, about 90 per cent of foundation works and 67 per cent of tower assembly works had been completed. The remaining works include dismantling the existing transmission line, erecting new transmission towers and installing new conductors.
To facilitate the works safely, the existing transmission line will be temporarily de-energised, resulting in planned and localised power outages affecting customers served by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations. GRIDCo and ECG will issue advance notices ahead of each scheduled outage and aim to restore electricity before the evening peak period.
The Ministry also announced that GRIDCo will replace one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer to improve transmission capacity, operational flexibility and the reliability of electricity supply across Kumasi and nearby communities.
The final phase of construction is expected to be completed within three months. The Ministry urged residents to avoid designated construction areas and comply with all safety instructions issued by project personnel during the period.
