ECG warns indebted customers to settle arrears or face disconnection

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cautioned customers, including government institutions, to clear their outstanding electricity bills or risk being disconnected from the national grid.

The power distribution company said institutions that fail to settle their debts in line with Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) regulations will face disconnection by the National Revenue Protection Taskforce.

The taskforce, which will be led by a coordinator from the Ministry of Energy, has been mandated to tackle revenue losses, including illegal connections and unpaid bills.

In a statement, ECG said it has the authority to publish the names of institutions indebted to the company but stressed that it would continue efforts to ensure all customers pay their bills promptly.

“Customers are encouraged to pay their bills promptly to avoid any embarrassment,” the company stated.

State-owned enterprises and other customers have also been advised to verify the identification cards of taskforce members and cooperate with them during enforcement exercises.

The warning follows a three-day ultimatum issued to several institutions, including Parliament House, the Ministry of Communications, the University of Ghana, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and 31 other organisations, to settle debts amounting to nearly GH¢70 million or face disconnection.

Earlier, ECG disconnected some institutions, including the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), parts of the Kotoka International Airport, the Accra Sports Stadium, and La Palm Beach Hotel over unpaid electricity bills.

The company also revealed that some state institutions, including the Finance Ministry and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), had previously been listed for disconnection after owing GH¢421,038.02.

On illegal connections, ECG said it would reward informants with 6 per cent of the surcharged amount from confirmed illegal connection cases reported to the company. The identities of informants, it added, would remain confidential.

ECG disclosed that its taskforce monitored 135,000 meters last year, with about 15,000 found to have been illegally connected.
