In a significant milestone in the fight against open defecation, 77 communities, including Waniato and James Nkwanta School Junction, have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region.
This achievement was marked by the construction of 64 household toilets as part of a concerted effort to reduce open defecation in the area.
The Agona West Municipal Assembly has garnered praise for being declared the number one ODF Area in the Central Region. To sustain this achievement and uphold its status as the best-ranked Municipal Assembly in sanitation in the region, the Assembly has reactivated the monthly clean-up exercise to promote a healthy environment.
Mr. Evans Addison Onomah Coleman, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), commended the efforts of Mr. George Freeman, the Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, and his team for their hard work and dedication that led to this remarkable feat.
The MCE expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including members of the Assembly, heads of departments, religious leaders, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and residents for their diverse support in achieving the municipality's sanitation objectives.
Addressing health concerns, Mr. Coleman revealed that the Assembly had formed a task force to crack down on noise pollution and the sale of unauthorized medicines to prevent complications.
Additionally, plans were underway to establish a task force targeting traders selling consumables with expired dates to safeguard public health.
He urged the community to continue practicing sound environmental cleanliness as a collective effort to protect public health.
