The Ho Medical Waste Treatment Facility has been officially commissioned in the Volta Region, providing an advanced solution for medical waste management.
The facility, established through a partnership between Medical Waste Services Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, the Government, and Ecosteryl, a foreign waste technology company, employs cutting-edge technologies to process medical waste safely and sustainably.
The treatment plant utilizes a fully automated system incorporating microwave technologies and shredders to convert medical waste into recyclables, producing up to ten tonnes of recyclable material daily. Importantly, this process ensures zero risk of environmental pollution or infection.
The Ho Medical Waste Treatment Facility is the second of its kind in Ghana, replacing the traditional incineration method that raised health concerns. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Mr. Mahama Asei Seini, the Deputy Minister for Health, and Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister.
Mr. Mahama Asei Seini acknowledged the government's commitment to modern waste treatment facilities for all regions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and monitoring to sustain the new waste treatment regime.
Dr. Letsa commended the Jospong Group for its dedication to enhancing sanitation in Ghana and called on medical facilities to utilize the treatment centre.
Mr. Haidar, Executive Director of the Jospong Group, expressed the company's commitment to a clean environment and praised the President's vision and leadership in fostering private sector participation.
The facility is expected to generate around 200 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to the development of the Akrofu site as a waste treatment complex with integrated recycling and a special liquid waste recycling plant.
The facility's establishment has transformed the Akrofu farming community into an industrial hub, with the potential to provide training and demonstrations to health workers and partners in effective waste management.
Dedicated medical waste collection trucks will enable the centralization of waste treatment services for the entire Volta Region.
The commissioning event was attended by stakeholders from various sectors, including the Environmental Health Department, Ho Teaching Hospital, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho School of Hygiene, and local chiefs.
The Regional Minister led an inspection of the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant being developed by the Jospong Group at the complex.
