NPP Minority boycotts parliamentary orientation over venue and cost concerns

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament has boycotted a three-day orientation programme for the 9th Parliament, citing concerns over the choice of venue and the cost of hosting the event.

The programme, currently underway at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho, began on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and will run until Monday, March 3. However, the Minority formally communicated their decision to opt-out on the night of Friday, February 28.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, expressed disappointment over the boycott, describing it as regrettable and unjustified. He emphasized the importance of the orientation, noting that such programmes help equip lawmakers with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their duties effectively.

“Our brothers and sisters of the New Patriotic Party have opted out, giving a reason that is completely unacceptable,” Speaker Bagbin stated at the opening session.

The Minority argued that the cost of hosting the event was excessive and questioned the selection of Volta Serene Hotel as the venue, suggesting that the decision may have been politically motivated.

In response, Speaker Bagbin defended the choice of location, explaining that a thorough assessment was conducted before settling on the venue.

“There is always a search team that evaluates potential venues based on cost, facilities, convenience, and suitability before a final decision is made,” he clarified.

Despite the absence of the Minority, the orientation is proceeding as planned.
