Police said the case was reported on July 17, 2026, after the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, told officers she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of the convict, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.

When she returned, both the child and the convict were missing.

Acting on intelligence, police arrested Stella Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the baby unharmed.

During investigations, the convict admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains at large.

Police said the suspect was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and remanded into police custody.

She reappeared before the court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist with investigations.

The Volta North Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
