The General Transport, Petroleum, and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) have issued a threat to embark on a sit-down strike if the government fails to reinstate two interdicted union leaders at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR). The union leaders, Ms Serwah Duncan-Williams and Mr Anthony Koomson were interdicted by TOR's board for engaging with the media regarding the refinery's partnership deal with Torentco Asset Management Limited.
Mr Bernard Owusu, the National Chairman of GTPCWU, announced that the union's National Executive Council made the decision during a meeting on Friday. If the two union leaders are not reinstated by Friday, February 3, 2024, the union, along with its affiliates, including the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCO), Shell, GOIL, Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), and KLM, among others, will initiate a sit-down strike.
The planned strike includes ensuring that no work is carried out in these companies and picketing at TOR's premises until the interdicted union leaders are reinstated. The union intends to notify the police of their intentions in adherence to the Public Order Act.
