Hope for Future Generations intensifies HIV awareness at Volta Trade Fair: Ghana News

In collaboration with the (GHS) and the Ghana AIDS Commission, Hope for Future Generations (HFFG) took proactive measures to raise awareness about during the Sixth Volta Trade and Investment Fair.

The initiative included on-site testing, distribution of self-test kits, educational materials on Behavior Communication Change, and the provision of condoms to fair attendees.

Ms. Rita Lodonu, Project Officer of HFFG, highlighted the impact of their efforts, stating, “A total of 375 kits were distributed to 174 males and 201 females.” Additionally, 42 individuals were assisted with on-site testing, addressing concerns about self-testing at home and ensuring proper interpretation of results.

Mrs. Mary Naa Asheley Anyomi, Volta Regional Coordinator for the Ghana AIDS Commission/TSU, shared alarming statistics, revealing that an estimated 16,996 individuals were living with in the as of the close of 2022.

She emphasized that a significant 68% of the estimated HIV population was concentrated in nine districts within the region, including , , , West, , , , , and Kpando Municipality.

Furthermore, Mrs. Anyomi disclosed that the region recorded 730 new HIV infections across all age groups during the specified period.

Notably, young people between the ages of 15 and 24 accounted for 12.05% of these new infections, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address HIV transmission among this demographic.

The collaborative efforts of HFFG, GHS, and the Ghana AIDS Commission at the Volta Trade and Investment Fair underscore the importance of proactive public health initiatives to curb the spread of HIV and promote awareness and testing within communities.
