The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the management of Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region to immediately recall over 30 students who were placed on indefinite suspension last week.

The directive follows a decision by the school’s management to suspend the students over allegations of immoral behaviour and possession of mobile phones on campus. However, the move was taken without consulting the district or regional GES directorates and without notifying the student’s parents.

Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, confirmed the reversal of the decision, stating that the school had no authority to impose such a punishment. Speaking to JoyNews, he explained that the headmaster and his assistant had only informed his office after the students had already been sent home.

“I told him to recall the students because he has no authority to suspend them,” Mr Yeboah said, adding that he would visit the school to engage with management and ensure that the students return to continue their studies.

The initial suspension was based on findings from a seven-member committee that investigated the students’ alleged misconduct. However, the school’s decision came under scrutiny after Myjoyonline reported on the issue, prompting GES to intervene.

GES has assured the public that it will closely monitor the situation to ensure due process is followed in handling disciplinary matters.
