Police dismantle alleged drug distribution network targeting university students, arrest 44 in Ashanti Region

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled an alleged drug distribution network suspected of targeting university students during intelligence-led operations conducted in the Ashanti Region.

According to a press release issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on July 7, 2026, the operations were carried out between July 3 and July 5, 2026, by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT) in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

Police said the operations resulted in the arrest of 44 suspects, comprising 41 males and three females, for various narcotics-related offences.

According to the Police, a key outcome of the operation was the dismantling of an alleged drug distribution network suspected of producing, distributing and selling narcotic-infused products targeted at university students. Police intelligence indicates that the network had been operating around university communities.

The principal suspects arrested include Emmanuel Duah, 24, who is alleged to have produced cannabis-laced toffees, advertised them online, and sold them primarily to students.

Also arrested were Richard Boateng, 45, who is alleged to have produced cannabis-infused alcoholic beverages for distribution to students, and Frederick Agyei, who is alleged to have been a principal supplier of cannabis to university students.

The operation also led to the recovery of 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol (Trama King) tablets and quantities of 250mg Tramadol tablets.

Officers also seized 400 sealed wraps of dried leaves, a sealed black polythene bag containing dried leaves, locally prepared fruit juice (“Femude”), and a medium-sized double-door refrigerator containing locally prepared concoctions, all suspected to be narcotic substances.

Additionally, quantities of Rizla rolling papers and nine casino jackpot machines believed to have been used in illegal activities were recovered.

Police said all the exhibits have been secured for forensic examination and evidential purposes, while the suspects remain in custody, assisting with investigations.

The Ghana Police Service said it is pursuing additional suspects believed to be connected to the alleged drug distribution network to dismantle every link in the supply chain and bring all those involved to justice.

The Service assured the public, particularly students, parents and educational institutions, of its commitment to protecting schools and communities from illicit drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

It also commended members of the public whose intelligence supported the operation and encouraged citizens to continue providing credible information to assist law enforcement in the fight against crime.
