Upper West Regional Minister emphasizes importance of credible elections on Ghana’s Independence Day

Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, the Regional Minister, highlighted the pivotal role of credible elections in consolidating democracy, stressing that the (EC) holds the responsibility to ensure the conduct of such elections in Ghana.

Addressing the gathering in Lawra during the Regional commemoration of Ghana's 67th Independence Day under the theme “Our Democracy, Our Pride,” Dr. Salih emphasized that credible elections are fundamental to a robust democracy. He commended the government's efforts to support the smooth operation of the and urged political parties to demonstrate that elections are not a matter of life or death.

Dr. Salih emphasized the symbiotic relationship between peace and development, noting that sustainable development is unattainable without peace. Acknowledging the challenges inherent in multi-party democracy, he praised Ghanaians for their commitment to democratic principles without resorting to violent means.

Cautioning against statements that incite confrontation or violence, Dr. Salih reiterated the government's commitment to assisting the Electoral Commission in conducting credible, free, and fair elections. He urged the people of the region to uphold peace to foster sustainable democracy and development.

The Independence Day celebration featured a parade comprising eight contingents, including security personnel and representatives from 35 schools. Eremon Senior High Technical School emerged as winners in the Senior High Schools category, while Pentecost Preparatory and Lawra E/A Primary School excelled in their respective categories.

Captain Kwesi Arthur Barnes of the 10th Mechanised Battalion led the parade, accompanied by bands from the Customs Regimental Band from and the 10th Mechanised Battalion Band. The event also showcased a procession of armored vehicles and military security dogs.

Noteworthy contributors to the development of the Lawra Municipality, including employees of Zoomlion Ghana, were recognized and rewarded during the celebration.

The commemoration underscored the importance of democracy, peace, and national development, highlighting the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in ensuring Ghana's progress and prosperity.
