Asante Kotoko confirms death of supporter, condemns violence, GFA charges Nsoatreman

Popular Asante Kotoko supporter, 'Pooley', was stabbed to death in Nsoatre after the Nsoatreman vs Asante Kotoko game.

Asante Kotoko has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred their Ghana Premier League Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park. The game, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Kotoko, was overshadowed by violent confrontations both on and off the pitch, resulting in multiple injuries, property destruction, and the tragic death of a Kotoko supporter.

In an official statement, Kotoko revealed that their team faced hostility from sections of the home supporters from the moment they arrived at the stadium. During the match, missiles were thrown at their bench, and their Head of Media sustained a serious ear injury after being struck by an object. The violence escalated when some supporters invaded the pitch, physically assaulting Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara and pelting him with projectiles.

Tensions worsened after the referee issued four red cards, leading to post-match clashes between rival supporters. Reports indicate that media personnel and travelling Kotoko fans were also attacked. Tragically, one supporter who was stabbed during the chaos later succumbed to his injuries at the Sunyani Hospital.

Kotoko also reported extensive damage to valuable team equipment, including laptops and communication devices used by their technical team. The club has called for immediate investigations and stricter security measures at league venues to prevent such incidents in the future.

GFA charges Nsoatreman FC

Following the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged Nsoatreman FC with breaching Sections 16 of the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019, and Article 42(6) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019. The club is accused of failing to control its supporters, who invaded the pitch, assaulted an away team player, attacked GFA-authorized media personnel, and destroyed property.

Additionally, Nsoatreman FC allegedly obstructed a GFA media partner from filming the match. The club has until Wednesday, February 5, 2025, to respond to the charges. Further review of official reports and video evidence is ongoing, with the possibility of additional sanctions.

Kotoko has pledged full cooperation with the GFA and is urging swift and decisive action to hold those responsible accountable.
