Forest Green Rovers, an English football club, has made headlines by appointing its first female head coach for a professional men's team.
However, the historic appointment was short-lived as Hannah Dingley was replaced by Dave Horseman after just two matches. Forest Green Rovers, currently competing in League Two, decided to bring in Dave Horseman, who previously served as Southampton's B team boss, to take over the managerial role for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
Hannah Dingley's appointment as the first woman to manage a professional men's team in England was seen as a significant milestone.
However, her tenure as head coach, which began on July 5, will come to an end on Thursday as Horseman assumes the position alongside assistant coach Louis Carey.
Chairman Dale Vince expressed his gratitude to Dingley for her interim leadership, stating, “Although she did not get the top job this time, it's undoubtedly been a valuable experience and a big step on her career path.”
Vince went on to welcome Dave Horseman, highlighting his experience and modern approach to the game, which aligns with the club's vision.
Dingley, who holds a Uefa Pro Licence, had been overseeing the team's progress during their pre-season trip to Ireland. She will manage the team for their upcoming friendlies against Coventry City and Everton under-21s before stepping down.
Horseman's appointment comes following Forest Green Rovers' relegation to League Two under the management of Dungan Ferguson.
Vince explained that Horseman stood out among more than 100 applicants for the position. Horseman himself expressed excitement about the role, saying, “The supporters can look forward to seeing a team with energy and aggression and one that they can be proud of.”
With previous experience as a first-team coach at Southampton, as well as coaching roles at Bristol City and Watford, Horseman brings a wealth of knowledge to the club.
Dingley, when appointed as interim boss, emphasized that her appointment was not a mere gimmick but an opportunity to pave the way for more women in coaching positions.
She said, “It's the first and it's great, but I don't want to be the only one. We need more females in these positions in clubs.” Dingley believes that increasing the representation of women in boys' systems and academies will lead to more opportunities like hers.
Forest Green Rovers will commence their League Two campaign against Salford City on August 5, under the guidance of Dave Horseman. Despite the unexpected managerial change, the club remains determined to succeed and make its mark in the upcoming season.
