Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, the Founding Director of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the University of Ghana, has been honoured by being named in the 2024 list of the 100 Most Reputable Africans. Prof. Danquah, a distinguished academic specializing in plant genetics, is also a Professor at the Department of Crop Science in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana.
The annual list, compiled by Reputation Poll, recognizes the most respected and admired individuals across various sectors, including politics, business, entertainment, and human rights advocacy. Prof. Danquah's inclusion is a testament to his impact, visibility, and integrity in the field of plant genetics and higher education.
Prof. Danquah has received numerous accolades, including the University of Ghana Distinguished Award for Meritorious Service in 2013. He serves as a member of the IAEA's Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications, and he was honoured with the 2018 Laureate of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agriculture and Life Sciences (GCHERA) World Agriculture Prize. He holds the position of President of the African Plant Breeders Association.
As an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia and a Visiting Scientist at Cornell University, Prof. Danquah's contributions extend globally. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of WACCI in 2007, which aims to train a new generation of plant breeders focused on improving staple crops in West and Central Africa.
Among the notable Ghanaians joining Prof. Danquah on the 2024 list are Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of The Church of Pentecost; Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police; and other outstanding individuals from various fields.
