President Nana Akufo-Addo has recognized the legitimacy of the demand made by the family of the late President John Evans Atta Mills for his autopsy report.
The President conveyed this sentiment after a meeting with the family at Jubilee House, where they appealed for the release of the report.
“I'll have to find out how to proceed on that, but it's a legitimate demand,” President Akufo-Addo stated, responding to the family's request for the autopsy report during the visit.
The late President's spokesperson, Mr. Koku Anyidoho, informed the President that only Mills' brother, Samuel Atta Mills, claims to have the autopsy report.
“It should be part of our official documentation and public records,” President Akufo-Addo emphasized, underscoring the importance of transparency in such matters.
The appeal for the autopsy report was presented by Nana Enyimfua III, representing the family, during the visit to the President in Accra on Saturday.
Expressing concern over the unknown cause of President Atta Mills' death, Nana Enyimfua III stressed the significance of obtaining the report for closure and historical records.
Addressing President Akufo-Addo, Nana Enyimfua III stated, “Our biggest problem as a family is that ever since I was enstooled as queenmother, I have not seen any autopsy report in the family.
That is the biggest problem I have with the family because if someone asks me what killed him I won't know if the doctor said he broke his arm or his neck or drunk something.”
The queenmother pleaded with the President and the government to provide the autopsy report, ensuring that future generations would learn from it. She urged, “So I plead with you on behalf of the family, before you leave office let us get the autopsy report.”
