Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to remain committed to truth, accountability, and national interest as the country marked the 44th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the commemoration, held under the theme “Consolidating the Reset Agenda: Reflections on the Gains of the 31st December Revolution,” the Vice President said the revolution was driven by a resolve to put Ghana first, confront injustice, restore accountability and protect the dignity of ordinary citizens.

She said the events of December 31, led by Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, reshaped Ghana’s political consciousness and laid the foundation for the revolutionary tradition that later gave rise to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Prof Opoku-Agyemang paid tribute not only to well-known historical figures but also to the unnamed men and women, soldiers and ordinary citizens whose sacrifices and convictions helped shape the nation’s path. She said their actions were guided by a belief in what was best for the majority and in values that would advance Ghana’s development.

She conveyed New Year greetings from President Mahama and commended participants in the commemoration parade, particularly the children, whose presence, she said, underscored the need to preserve and transmit national values to future generations.

Reflecting on the significance of the anniversary, the Vice President said the occasion should prompt an honest assessment of the nation’s achievements and shortcomings. She stressed that Ghana’s stability depends on collective responsibility, accountability and commitment to building a country that works for all.

She urged Ghanaians to stay grounded in truth and keep the nation’s interests at the centre of national life, stressing that the revolution was a collective national effort aimed at building a just, caring and responsible society.

According to her, that responsibility remains with the current generation, and must be carried forward with unity of purpose, principled leadership and a shared commitment to leaving Ghana better than it was found.
